There is word going around that a diesel engine can be converted to use vegetable oil in addition to diesel as fuel. The car supposedly runs equally well on either and the mileage from vegetable oil is also about the same as with diesel. The cost to convert a diesel vehicle to the duel fuel is between $900.00 and $3000.00 (plus the cost of the autumobile! byoa).
The thought of going to the grocery store to fuel a vehicle is intriguing. Going out to eat and fueling up the car while there doesn't sound bad either, especially with gasoline prices hovering around $3.00 a gallon. Disposed oil from restaurants can be strained and used for fuel. Consumers can collect and strain the oil themselves, making this a little more work-intensive, but much cheaper, as at least some of this oil is available free of charge.
Vegetable oil burns more cleanly, and is a welcome alternative to our current choices. Maybe one day, next to the diesel pump will be one for vegetable oil, at a much lower cost. Maybe, too, that gas station will sit next to a dealership for duel fuel diesel/vegetable oil vehicles right from the factory. Hopefully, in the near future, ideas such as this will be mainstreamed, not just appear as interesting articles about a handful of people helping themselves and the environment at the same time! |
